Results show the sample “Luna” until you type. Accents are removed first (é → e). This is a letter-by-letter transliteration, not a translation.

What this tool does — and what it does not
It replaces each letter of a modern name with one rune from the Elder Futhark, using the simple convention in the table below. That is a transliteration: it changes the alphabet, not the language. It does not translate words into Old Norse or Proto-Germanic, and it does not give names a meaning.
With the “th + ng” option: ᚦᛟᚱ
Letter by letter: ᛏᚺᛟᚱ
There is no single official way to write modern English in runes. Other converters may make different choices — especially for c, q, v, x and y, which have no rune of their own. The output is plain Unicode text from the Runic block (U+16A0–U+16FF), so it can be copied and pasted.
The Elder Futhark in brief
- It has 24 runes and is the oldest form of the runic alphabets.1
- Its name comes from the sounds of its first six runes: f, u, th, a, r, k.1
- Rune names such as fehu or ansuz are modern reconstructions; the original names are not attested.1
- Unicode encodes the runes as characters with names like RUNIC LETTER FEHU FEOH FE F (U+16A0).2
This tool uses 23 of the 24 runes; the rune ᛇ (eihwaz) is not used in this convention. The rune names shown on this page follow the Unicode character names.2

Worked examples
| Name | With “th/ng” runes | Letter by letter | Characters | UTF-16 units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luna | ᛚᚢᚾᚨ | ᛚᚢᚾᚨ | 4 | 4 |
| Thor | ᚦᛟᚱ | ᛏᚺᛟᚱ | 3 | 3 |
| Ingrid | ᛁᛜᚱᛁᛞ | ᛁᚾᚷᚱᛁᛞ | 5 | 5 |
| Max | ᛗᚨᚲᛊ | ᛗᚨᚲᛊ | 4 | 4 |
| Zoë | ᛉᛟᛖ | ᛉᛟᛖ | 3 | 3 |
Runic characters are inside the Basic Multilingual Plane, so each one is a single UTF-16 unit — but three UTF-8 bytes. The name character counter shows all four counts for any runic name.
Seeing empty boxes instead of runes?
Runic letters need a font that includes them. If the device showing the text has none, the runes appear as empty boxes or question marks — the text is still correct. Check the result on the device where it will be seen before using it in a profile or a game name. To add a frame or symbols around a runic name, paste it into Name Decorations.
