How gothic (Fraktur) text works

“Gothic” text here means Fraktur letters — the blackletter style Unicode includes for mathematics. Like the cursive styles, they are separate characters rather than a font, which is why they survive copy and paste. Most come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block (U+1D400–U+1D7FF).

Each letter of “Luna” is swapped for a different Unicode character — nothing is drawn or embedded. Letters from the Mathematical block take more space in UTF-16 and UTF-8 than the Letterlike ones.

Five Fraktur capitals (C, H, I, R, Z) already existed in the Letterlike Symbols block and are used from there — for example ℭ is U+212D BLACK-LETTER CAPITAL C. Bold Fraktur has no gaps: all 52 letters are in the Mathematical Alphanumeric block.

What changes and what does not

  • Only A–Z and a–z change. Numbers, punctuation, emoji and spaces are copied unchanged.
  • Accented letters stay plain. “Zoë” becomes ℨ𝔬ë.
  • Readability. Blackletter capitals can be hard to tell apart at small sizes, so preview long words before using them.
  • Length. Characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric block take 2 UTF-16 units and 4 UTF-8 bytes each — check limits with the name character counter.

Where to use it — and where to be careful

  • Screen readers may read these characters out by their names or skip them; keep important text plain.
  • Search may not match gothic letters to ordinary ones, so a styled name can be harder to find.
  • Usernames and game names may reject them — paste into the field and check first. See the guide to Unicode symbols in usernames for the details.
  • Empty boxes mean the device lacks a font for that character.

Frequently asked questions

What is gothic text?
On this page “gothic” means Fraktur — a blackletter style of the Latin alphabet. The tool replaces each letter with the matching Unicode Fraktur character, so the result is copyable text.
Is this a font I need to install?
No. The result is ordinary Unicode text made of special letter characters, so you can paste it anywhere that accepts text. Nothing is installed.
Why are some characters not converted?
This tool only changes the basic letters A–Z and a–z. Numbers, accented letters such as é or ñ, and other alphabets are copied as they are.
Why do I see empty boxes?
The device showing the text has no font that includes those characters. The text is still correct; it just cannot be drawn there. Preview it on the device where it will be seen.
Does styled text count as more characters?
It can. Each letter from the Mathematical Alphanumeric block is one Unicode character, but two UTF-16 units and four UTF-8 bytes. Systems that count UTF-16 units or bytes will see a longer name. The name character counter shows all four numbers.
