Name Character Counter: How Long Is Your Name, Really?

See how long a name really is: characters you see, Unicode code points, UTF-16 units and UTF-8 bytes. Check it against your own limit, character by character.

Four ways to count one name

β€œHow many characters is this name?” has more than one correct answer. Apps and games use different units, so a name that fits in one place can be too long in another.

The four measurements this counter shows
MeasurementWhat it counts
Characters you seeGrapheme clusters β€” what a reader sees as one character, even when it is built from several code points (an emoji family, a letter with an accent mark).
Unicode code pointsEach Unicode character separately. β€œΓ«β€ can be one code point or two (e + a combining mark) and look identical.
UTF-16 unitsThe unit JavaScript, Java and many systems use internally. Characters beyond U+FFFF β€” most emoji and the styled letters on NameFonts β€” take two units.
UTF-8 bytesStorage size in UTF-8: 1 byte for basic Latin letters, 2–4 bytes for others.

The family emoji is three emoji joined by two invisible zero-width joiners. Each counting method sees a different length.

The second and third rows look the same, but one has 3 code points and the other 4. If a name is rejected or counted oddly, an invisible combining mark like this is a common reason.

Which number does my app or game use?

We do not list limits for specific games or apps: they change, and we have not been able to verify them. Instead, find out which unit the app counts:

  1. Type a plain name in the app and note the limit it reports or enforces.
  2. Paste a name with a styled letter or an emoji and see whether it uses up one or two places.
  3. Match that behaviour to one of the four numbers here, then set the limit above with the same unit.

Why styled names run out of space sooner

Most styled letters from the cursive and gothic generators come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, beyond U+FFFF. Each of those is 1 code point but 2 UTF-16 units and 4 UTF-8 bytes β€” so β€œπ“›π“Ύπ“·π“ͺ” is 4 code points but 8 UTF-16 units and 16 bytes. A few letters, such as β„’ or β„, come from the older Letterlike Symbols block instead and take 1 UTF-16 unit and 3 bytes. Runes from the runes name converter are similar: each is 1 UTF-16 unit and 3 UTF-8 bytes.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my name count as more characters than I can see?
Some characters are built from several code points (an emoji family, a letter plus a combining mark), and characters beyond U+FFFF use two UTF-16 units. Apps that count code points or UTF-16 units will report a bigger number than what you see.
Do you know the name limit for my game?
We do not list game or app limits because we could not verify them and they change. Use the limit box with the unit your app counts; the steps on this page show how to find out which unit that is.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser; the text you type is not sent to NameFonts.
What is a grapheme cluster?
It is what a reader sees as a single character. For example, πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ is one grapheme cluster made of several code points joined together.
Why do β€œZoë” and β€œZoë” count differently?
One uses the single character Γ« (U+00EB); the other uses e followed by a combining diaeresis (U+0308). They look identical but have different code point counts.
