The anatomy of a decorated name
Most decorated names use the same handful of parts. Seeing them separately makes it easier to design your own instead of copying a long string you do not understand.

- Frame — a matching pair on both sides, such as ꧁ ꧂ or 【 】.
- Accent — a small symbol next to the name: ★, ✦, ♡.
- Tag — a clan or team abbreviation in front, often in brackets: 【NX】.
- Separator — a mark between parts: ・, |, 乂.
- The name itself — plain or in a styled letter set.
Where the symbols come from
Decorations are ordinary Unicode characters borrowed from many places: punctuation from Asian writing systems, mathematical brackets, dingbats, and letters from other alphabets. The table shows common ones with their official Unicode names (checked with Python’s unicodedata module).
| Symbols | What they are | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| ꧁ ꧂ | Javanese punctuation (rerenggan) U+A9C1 Javanese Left Rerenggan · U+A9C2 Javanese Right Rerenggan | Big, ornate frame — the classic “gaming name” look |
| 【 】 | CJK lenticular brackets U+3010 Left Black Lenticular Bracket · U+3011 Right Black Lenticular Bracket | Bold, clean frame; works well with short names |
| 『 』 | CJK white corner brackets U+300E Left White Corner Bracket · U+300F Right White Corner Bracket | Lighter frame, reads well at small sizes |
| ⟦ ⟧ | Mathematical white square brackets U+27E6 Mathematical Left White Square Bracket · U+27E7 Mathematical Right White Square Bracket | Technical / futuristic feel |
| ★ ☆ ✦ ✧ | Stars from Miscellaneous Symbols and Dingbats U+2605 Black Star · U+2606 White Star · U+2726 Black Four Pointed Star · U+2727 White Four Pointed Star | Accents at the edges |
| ♡ ❀ ✿ | Hearts and florettes U+2661 White Heart Suit · U+2740 White Florette · U+273F Black Florette | Soft, cute accents |
| † ☾ ☽ | Dagger and moon symbols U+2020 Dagger · U+263E Last Quarter Moon · U+263D First Quarter Moon | Dark or mysterious accents |
Borrowed letters are real letters
Some popular “symbols” are letters or punctuation in living writing systems. ღ is GEORGIAN LETTER GHAN; 乂 and 彡 are Chinese characters (CJK Unified Ideographs); ミ is a Japanese katakana letter. Using them decoratively is common, but readers of those languages see letters, not ornaments — so your name may read as a word to them.
Keep the name readable
- Decorate the edges, not the middle. Symbols between letters make a name hard to read and search.
- One frame or one accent is usually enough. A light decoration looks deliberate; stacked decorations look noisy in a lobby list.
- Check it at the real size. A frame that looks great in a large preview can blur into the name in a small scoreboard.
- Avoid combining marks. Characters that stack accents above or below letters (the “glitch” look) often overlap other text and are frequently blocked.
Decorations count towards your limit
Every symbol is at least one character, and some count as two in apps that measure UTF-16 units. A heavy frame can use a large part of a short name limit.
| Name | Style | Code points | UTF-16 units |
|---|---|---|---|
| ꧁Nova꧂ | Frame | 6 | 6 |
| ★ Nova ★ | Edge accents | 8 | 8 |
| Nova ✦ | Single trailing accent | 6 | 6 |
| 【NX】Nova | Tag + name | 8 | 8 |
| ꧁༒Nova༒꧂ | Heavy frame | 8 | 8 |
Paste any decorated name into the Name Character Counter to see every count before you use it.
Decorate respectfully
Some characters are religious or cultural symbols — for example ☬ (Unicode name ADI SHAKTI), a Sikh religious symbol, and various crosses and sacred marks. Using them as decoration can offend people who hold them sacred, and some games filter them. When you are unsure what a symbol means, look it up first or choose a neutral star, bracket or flower instead.
Will it display everywhere?
Common brackets, stars and hearts are widely supported. Rarer symbols — and some ornate frames — depend on fonts that not every device has, and may appear as empty boxes for other players (see why symbols show as boxes). Games also decide for themselves which characters they allow. Test the finished name in the game’s rename field and, if you can, on a second device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a game accept my decorated name?
That depends on the game. Each game decides which characters it allows and can change its rules, so paste the name into the rename field to check before you use a rename item.
Why does my decoration show as boxes for my friend?
Their device has no font with that symbol. Common brackets, stars and hearts display on most devices; rare symbols are the most likely to fail.
